Campaign History

In 2002, two factors led children's advocates to consider new ways of getting their message to state policy makers. The Kansas City based Partnership for Children (PFC) and Citizens for Missouri's Children (CMC), a statewide advocacy organization, saw children and families losing ground in the state budget as Missouri's state fiscal situation grew worse. Term limits came into full effect, leaving lobbyists as the largest knowledge base for inexperienced legislators. Lacking the financial resources of full-time, private lobbyists, PFC and CMC decided to join together and resurrect the #1 Question Campaign on a statewide basis.

CMC and PFC embarked on a series of electoral advocacy strategies during the fall of 2004 including radio ads, direct mail, op-eds and a series of candidate forums in six districts that lead to "kid-friendly" candidates getting elected to the House and Senate.

Today, Citizens for Missouri's Children is able to continue carrying on this work and extend our reach into the communities across the state.
